About Karen Riehm

Karen Riehm Artist's Statement:
Karen T. Riehm is a Water Media Artist and Signature Member in AWA (Arizona Watercolor Association) and Arizona Art Alliance. Born in Crawfordsville, Indiana Karen grew up in beautiful Sierra Vista, Arizona. Her mother was an artist and they took a lot of fun art classes together! After 4 years in the Coast Guard she started her college education and finally graduated from University of Phoenix with a Bachelors of Arts in Management. Karen now lives and paints in Chandler, Arizona.

Karen has had many paintings juried into AWA Membership Exhibitions and one into the AWA National Exhibition and The Best of AWA Exhibition 2012. Her choices of mediums are acrylic, watercolor and gouache on watercolor paper and canvas. She is passionate about abstract art, as well as painting travel images from her many trips to Hawaii, the Caribbean, and around Arizona.

Biography:
The painting process begins for Karen with color and medium. It is a messy process, but when she's in her painting zone - it's a relaxing and comfortable place to be. Karen would like her paintings to reflect a response to color, bring about a feeling of belonging, and a desire to feel comfort and joy.

Abstract art is experimental and fun. Karen's work is vibrant and large with a focus on depth and movement. She finds herself motivated by happy accidents that happen throughout the painting process. Finding interesting mesas, flowering gardens and many interesting worlds can be discovered that it will inspire a whole new series! Karen particularly enjoys how each completed piece is so unique and one-of-a-kind in its form and color that it cannot be recreated no matter how hard the attempt, so it pushes her to constantly evolve and experiment further with her craft.

Karen has developed several methods of working with the paint, including pouring, pulling, pressing and dripping it onto canvas. The paint dries slowly, and in the process of drying, random beautiful things occur that make the painting exciting. Acrylic and latex paint comes in a variety of finishes, including satin, semi-gloss, gloss, flat, and eggshell that add depth and texture to the surface of the painting.
